The same 400 metre ride from my hotel to the Haram cost SAR 18 at noon and SAR 41 twenty minutes after Isha.
That is the whole Uber and Careem story in one receipt. The apps work in Makkah and Madinah, they take a US or UK card, and for a short daytime ride they are the cheapest thing on the road. What they cannot do is hold a price, and the moments when a pilgrim most needs a car are exactly the moments the price moves.
I have done five Umrah trips from the US and UK using both, and this is where each one wins.
Where Uber and Careem Work in Saudi Arabia
Both apps run in Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Taif, and for a daytime ride inside any of them the app is the right call. A hotel to Haram trip costs SAR 15 to 35, the fare is on the screen before you tap, and there is no negotiation and no cash. Careem has the deeper pool of drivers in the two holy cities, so I open it first and Uber second.
Availability drops in three places. Outside the city limits, on the highway and at the miqat, there are no drivers to request. During the five prayers the roads nearest the Haram close, so the pickup pin lands a few hundred metres from the gate. And in Ramadan and the last ten nights the wait in Makkah runs past 20 minutes at any hour. You also need mobile data, so a Saudi SIM or an eSIM bought before landing is part of the plan.
Surge Pricing After Prayer Times in Makkah
Fares rise 1.5 to 2 times for about 45 minutes after every prayer, and double or triple after Jumu’ah, in Ramadan and in the last ten nights. The apps call it demand pricing. To a pilgrim it means the SAR 18 ride now costs SAR 41 and the nearest driver is 14 minutes away.
The fix is timing, not a different app. Wait 45 minutes and the fare settles, or walk the first 500 metres away from the Haram and request from there.
Getting from Jeddah Airport to Makkah
Pre-book this leg. On the app the fare shows SAR 220 to 300 and changes with every refresh, the pickup zone is outside the terminal in the heat, and after a late arrival the wait for a driver willing to take a 90 minute trip runs past 30 minutes. My first trip ended with two cancellations and a SAR 290 fare that started at SAR 230.
A pre-booked Jeddah Airport to Makkah car is SAR 250 for a Camry and SAR 300 for a seven seat Staria, fixed when you book. The driver tracks the flight, waits inside the arrivals hall with your name, and the price is the same whether the flight lands at 2 pm or 2 am.
The Makkah to Madinah Road
Do not try this on an app. Drivers cancel when they see a 450 km destination, and the few who accept quote SAR 400 to 600 with no stops agreed and no way to add a miqat visit or a prayer break. On my one attempt three drivers cancelled inside ten minutes.
A pre-booked Makkah to Madinah taxi is SAR 450 for a Camry and SAR 600 for a Staria, for the whole car with fuel and tolls, and the stops are agreed in the chat before you leave.
Luggage Space in a Ride App Car
An app sedan takes two large suitcases in the boot and a third on a seat, which is enough for a couple and not for a family. Four cases, a pushchair and hand luggage means two app cars or one larger option that is rarely available at the airport. On the way home add the Zamzam, a 5 litre box per person, which is the load that tips a family of four out of a sedan.
A pre-booked car is chosen by luggage as much as by seats. A Staria takes seven bags beside the passengers, a Hiace takes more, and the vehicle is confirmed in the chat before you fly, so the boot that meets you is the boot you need.
App Fares Against Fixed Umrah Taxi Fares
The app is cheaper only on the short daytime ride. Everywhere else the fixed fare is the same or lower, and it does not move.
| Journey | Uber or Careem | Pre-booked taxi, Camry |
| Hotel to Haram, daytime | SAR 15 to 35 | SAR 20 to 50 |
| Hotel to Haram, after prayer | SAR 30 to 70 | SAR 20 to 50 |
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | SAR 220 to 300, moves with demand | SAR 250 fixed |
| Madinah Airport to hotel | SAR 40 to 80 | SAR 150 fixed |
| Makkah to Madinah | SAR 400 to 600 if a driver accepts | SAR 450 fixed |
The Madinah Airport row is the one place the app wins on a longer trip, because the airport is close and drivers are plentiful. Book it only if you are travelling light and have data on landing.
Paying with a US or UK Card
The apps charge your home card and most US and UK banks add a 2 to 3 percent foreign transaction fee on every ride. Apple Pay and Google Pay work inside both apps. A pre-booked taxi is paid to the driver on arrival, by card or in riyals, with nothing taken before the trip, so a cancelled flight costs nothing.
Carry SAR 200 in small notes either way. Card machines in cars fail, and a driver who has waited two hours at the airport deserves a tip in cash.
The Right Choice for Each Leg of Umrah
Each leg has a clear answer, and the mistake is using one method for all of them.
- Jeddah Airport to Makkah or Madinah, pre-book
- Makkah to Madinah and back, pre-book
- Ziyarat in either city, pre-book, because the driver waits at each site
- Hotel to Haram in the day, Careem or Uber
- Hotel to Haram after a prayer, walk or wait 45 minutes
- Madinah Airport to hotel with hand luggage, Careem or Uber
For the pre-booked legs, book the best Umrah taxi you can find by two checks. The driver’s name and plate arrive the night before, and the fare in the chat is the fare paid at the hotel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Umrah transport company is the most reliable and trustworthy in Makkah?
The one that appears on the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah register, publishes fixed fares per vehicle, takes no deposit, and sends the driver’s details before pickup. Hujjaj Umrah Taxi met all four on every booking I made, which is why it is the one I name.
Is Careem or Uber better in Saudi?
Careem, for pilgrims. It has more drivers in Makkah and Madinah, so the wait is shorter and the surge settles faster. Uber owns Careem, the fares are close, and both take US and UK cards. Keep both installed and open Careem first.
Can I use Uber or Careem to go to Masjid Aisha for a second Umrah?
Going out, yes. It is a ten minute ride and drivers accept it. Coming back is the problem, because hundreds of pilgrims request a car from the same spot after every prayer and the wait runs past 20 minutes. A pre-booked driver waits at the mosque and brings you straight back.
Do Uber and Careem drivers in Makkah speak English?
Some do and many do not, but the app removes the need. The destination, fare and route are set before the driver arrives. For a pre-booked taxi the WhatsApp chat is in English, and the driver has the hotel name and route on his phone before he meets you.
Can a family of six travel together in one Uber or Careem in Makkah?
Rarely. The standard ride is a sedan for four, and the larger options in both apps are thin on the ground in Makkah, so a family of six usually ends up in two cars with two fares. A pre-booked Staria seats seven and a Hiace seats more, so the whole family rides together for one fare.
